As Scotland emerges from her winter slumber to find spring in full swing, as well as looking forward to summer and a long line of big anniversaries, this issue feels very much like one of reflection.
First up, we reflect on the fortunes of the city of Stirling, which for a long time was fiercely fought over by the Scottish and English, and which celebrates its 900th anniversary as a Royal Burgh this year.
In City of Heroes, we look back at some key events that elevated historic figures to legendary status following battles in and around the city – William Wallace and Robert the Bruce, we’re looking at you – and pinpoint some of the must-see sights on a visit to the city they call ‘Edinburgh in miniature’ today.
Of course, 2024 is a big year all round for Robert the Bruce as it marks 750 years since the King of Scots’ birth. In Good King Robert we speak with one of his descendants, Lord Bruce, to hear about some of the fascinating artefacts still found at the Family of Bruce’s home of Broomhall House.
More birthday celebrations will be held at Gleneagles this June, as the exemplary country-house resort, once hailed the ‘Riviera of the Highlands’, marks 100 years since its opening.
And a hundred years ago, another Scottish hero was busy preparing for the Paris 1924 Summer Olympics, in which he stormed home in the 400m race that July, winning Gold for Scotland. With this summer’s Olympic Games on the horizon, you can read all about the athlete and missionary Eric Liddell in A man of principles.
