After rumours swirling continuously since the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, on Thursday 8 September and his proclamation as King, Buckingham Palace have finally announced that King Charles III’s coronation will take place on Saturday 6 May 2023 at Westminster Abbey in London.

King Charles became monarch when his mother the late Queen died, but the coronation will mark a symbolic celebration of his new reign. With much pageantry and ritual, the King will be anointed as sovereign and the sacred St Edward’s crown will placed on his head.

Camilla, the Queen Consort, will be alongside the King and will also be crowned in the historic ceremony. She will be crowned with the the Crown of Queen Elizabeth, which was made for Queen Elizabeth II’s mother to wear at the coronation of her husband King George VI, and her own coronation as Queen Consort, in 1937.

Buckingham Palace has indicated that the ceremony will combine the ancient and modern – saying it will be “rooted in longstanding traditions” but will also “reflect the monarch’s role today and look towards the future”. Coronations have been held at Westminster Abbey for over 900 years, the first being that of William the Conqueror in 1066.

At 74, King Charles will also be the oldest new monarch to ever be crowned.
