On Scotland’s west coast, the charming Crinan Hotel has been run by the same family for decades

Crinan is a tiny village on the west coast of Scotland with an island-like quality, that sits at the end of a little road and bravely faces the Atlantic Ocean.

Here you will find the Crinan Hotel, tucked safely into the land looking out to the islands of Jura and Scarba and the Corryvreckan Whirlpool.

For over 200 years there has been a hotel at Crinan, which has been a gathering place for kings and queens, actresses and fishermen, farmers, and intrepid day-trippers; today visitors travel from all over the world to enjoy the famously warm hospitality with a faithful following returning year on year to make sure none of the important things have changed and to catch up with the family owners.

The Ryans have been at the Crinan Hotel for 55 years and have made it what it is today: a place that’s hard to forget and feels like a secret only revealed to a special few.

Now one lucky winner and their guest will be able to enjoy the delights of the Crinan Hotel, renowned for its delicious food, particularly its seafood, with guests able to watch the langoustine arrive off the boat from their bedroom window.

There are two dining options at the Crinan: the relaxed Seafood Bar, which, despite the name, also serves up sumptuous steaks and perfectly prepared vegetarian risottos and vegan dishes; and the more formal Westward restaurant that overlooks the islands on the west side of the hotel and offers spectacular sunsets.

After dinner, wander out to the sea wall and be dazzled by the stars that twinkle above as the dark waves lap below. Then retire to your cosy and artistically decorated room, with a fantastically comfortable bed.

Art connects everything at Crinan – artist owner Frances Macdonald is a legend in both the hotel and art worlds, with her eccentric and vibrant personality ensuring an environment of creativity throughout.

The hotel also runs boat trips out to see the local seal population, captained by Frances’s son, Ross Ryan, who takes guests around the islands and up the sea lochs in search of white-tailed eagles (sea-eagles) and ospreys, all while informing them of local history. If you’re lucky, dolphins may even escort the boat back to Crinan.

This fabulous competition prize includes a two-night B&B stay for our winner and their guest at the Crinan Hotel, with dinner for two on one of the evenings.
