The Edinburgh Festivals

Throughout the month of August, Edinburgh plays host to five major festivals and the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo with additional festivals of Politics (15 – 17 August: www.festivalofpolitics.org.uk), and
Television (26 – 28 August: www.thetvfestival.com), all taking place against the spectacular backdrop of Scotland's magnificent Capital City.

EDINBURGH INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL
With three weeks of the finest global classical music, theatre, opera and dance, Scotland's capital city is transformed into the cultural mecca of the world. In its 68th year, it goes from strength to strength.

ROYAL EDINBURGH MILITARY TATTOO
One of the greatest shows of pageantry, history and precision on earth, taking place on the esplanade of Edinburgh Castle. (See global plans, page 61).

EDINBURGH FESTIVAL FRINGE
Complimentary to its more highbrow older sister festival, this has been designated the largest comedy and arts festival in the world. Many a star of theatre and television owe their careers to their beginnings on the Edinburgh Fringe.

EDINBURGH INTERNATIONAL BOOK FESTIVAL
Located in a tented village in Charlotte Square, this creates a remarkable opportunity to meet and mingle with the world's favourite authors of fiction and non-fiction, with a few appropriate politicians and comedians thrown into the mix.

EDINBURGH ART FESTIVAL
Founded only 12 years ago, and including the remarkable collections of Edinburgh's public
