The Hotel Oscars

The world class Scottish hotel review system joins Scotland Magazine

Both Scotland Magazine and The Scottish Hotel Awards had their genesis a decade ago and over many years the magazine and national hotel awards scheme have worked together in various ways. So it is a natural progression that, as the 9th Scottish Hotel Awards dinner approaches on Sunday May 20th 2012, the awards and Scotland Magazine have come together in order to further develop what is recognised as one of the most comprehensive hotel industry motivation and recognition programs in the world.

Work began in 2003 on an awards scheme for the all-important Scottish hotel industry and during 2012 the team will be working towards the 10th anniversary event in May 2013.

This exciting new partnership benefits Scotland Magazine readers by bringing enhanced, accurate hotel reviews and tips – with full ‘insider knowledge’! And future issues will have greater hotel coverage to give you ideas and expert opinion to take into account when planning your stay. New this summer will be a separate publication, brought to you by The Scottish Hotel Awards 2012 and Scotland Magazine, called The Little Gold Book of Winning Hotels.

This charming and useful little book, to become an annual publication, widely distributed – not least with Scotland Magazine – will include and highlight the year’s nominees and ultimate winners in all categories.

The First Minister of Scotland, Alex Salmond, presented the awards a couple of years ago and both the Scottish Government and Scottish Parliament send a prominent representative – minister or Presiding Officer – to the awards presentation. The First Minister described the awards as “the flagship event for the Scottish hotel industry” and huge effort goes in each year to live up to this standard.

One of the reasons for the success of the process is the way the research team – which includes prominent and current hotel managers, owners and department heads – considers all areas of operation which make up hotels of all sizes. The annual Awards Night Party – often described as the ‘Scottish Hotel Oscars’ – is a very big night indeed.

Sold out annually it is now held at the largest hotel venue in Scotland and will this year have wonderful entertainment and more than a dash of celebrity so that hoteliers – from Shetland to Skye, from Aberdeen to the southern tip of Galloway, city and country, island and mainland – will have a memorable night to meet up, honour excellence and encourage the industry in general.

The end result is often a rise in standards and the judges have recognised this in very many hotels.

And surely that’s the best outcome for the visitor to our country.
