Under Sail

We look back at the recent Tall Ships race, which took in some of Scotland's most famous ports

A spectacular programme of tall masted ships and events greeted sailors and visitors recently across the west coast of Scotland.

From ceilidhs in Islay to the re-enactment of the age old tradition of bartering knitwear for goods with passing Tall Ships in Fair Isle, the Cruise in Company leg of the Tall Ships race was definitely a crowd pleaser from Greenock to Lerwick.

The fantastic line up of events, which stretched across the coastline including the ports of Port Ellen, Campbeltown, Oban, Ullapool, Stornoway, Kirkwall, Stromness, Fair Isle, Scalloway, Yell, Unst and Whalsay created an attractive trail for both the ships and their followers. In an amazing fete of co-ordination, visitors were treated to a first class musical line up with top Scottish performers. They participated in no less that three record breaking attempts at ‘Strip the Willow’, watched street parades and got involved in a whole host of other activities as they immersed themselves in a party atmosphere that stretched for 484 nautical miles from the south west of Scotland to the north east.
