2009 Scottish Hotel Awards

The sixth annual Scottish hotel awards were held at the Crowne Plaza, Glasgow. Around 400 people from the country's vital hospitality industry attended. Winners were chosen by a combination of reviews, mystery visits, consumer feedback and in depth interviews. For more information visit: www.TheScottishHotelAwards.com

And the winner is...

Hotel of the Year
Western House Hotel, Ayr
www.ayr-racecourse.co.uk/hotel.html
Tel: +44 (0)870 850 5666

Running right alongside Ayr’s famous racecourse, home of the
Scottish Grand National, is the Edwardian – but now perfectly
contemporary – Western House Hotel. Director William Gorol
commented after the win: “We’re thrilled to have won this most
prestigious of awards and honoured that a hotel in the southwest of
Scotland has been recognised for its gold star standards and high staff
calibre.” Amost apt winner, being right in the heart of ‘Burns
Country,’ in this the Year of Homecoming.

Manager of the Year
Seamus Coen, Macdonald Marine Hotel, North Berwick
www.macdonaldhotels.co.uk/marine
Tel: +44 (0)844 879 9130

A delightful team run this very good four-star hotel just a short
drive south of Edinburgh.
The hotel won a clutch of staff awards and the Awards Committee
felt that general manager Seamus Coen was a highly qualified
winner of the top manager title, having overseen this hotel with its
happy atmosphere for a couple of years now. Book a sea-facing
bedroom; try some of John-Paul MacLachlan’s very fine cuisine; and
don’t miss out on a therapeutic treatment in the wonderful spa.

Boutique Hotel of the Year
Duisdale House, Isle of Skye
www.duisdale.com
Tel: +44 (0)1471 833 202

For the first time in the history of the Scottish hotel awards, this
glamorous title has gone outside of a city. Duisdale House is a wildly
successful transformation of a homely if faded country house into a
sassy and stylish boutique hotel with fine dining.
The hotel also has a superb yacht and can take guests deep into
Skye’s sea lochs for champagne picnics. From the cheery welcome
from David or Anita on the front desk to the bold, sexy bedrooms
with breathtaking views, guests love the all-new Duisdale.

Romantic Hotel of the Year
Kinloch Lodge, Isle of Skye
www.kinloch-lodge.co.uk
Tel: +44 (0)1471 833 333

‘Exceptional in all departments’ wrote the
Awards’ deputy chairman Viv Devlin in her
summary – and indeed it is. Truly Scottish,
home of the chief of Clan Macdonald, with
wonderful contemporary touches.

Romantic Commendation
Loch Ness Lodge, Inverness-shire
www.loch-ness-lodge.com
Tel: +44 (0)1456 459 469

They strive for perfection here at this
beautiful new lochside manor hotel. Not
only is it romantic – should things
progress, the lodge also won the Intimate
Wedding Hotel of the Year 2009 title.

cameron-house/the-hotel

calibre, without question, as is the service.

Edinburgh Hotel of the Year
The George Hotel
www.principal-hayley.com/venues-andhotels/
the-george-hotel

Restaurant has made the George one of
Edinburgh’s most recommended.

Glasgow Hotel of the Year
ABode Glasgow
www.abodehotels.co.uk/glasgow
Tel +44(0)141 221 6789

Awards judge Neil Thomson, CEO of
Federation of Chefs Scotland, praised the
dining here thus: “You’ll not get a better
meal in Glasgow.” High praise for head
chef Craig Dunn and this on-the-up hotel.

Guest House of the Year
Caddon View, Peeblesshire
www.caddonview.co.uk
Tel: +44 (0)1896 830 208

Caddon View Country Guest House &
Restaurant is a great base for exploring
the Borders, well-priced and a cheery
welcome is absolutely guaranteed. As are
clean, comfortable bedrooms and
vibrantly fresh and real country cooking.

Country Hotel of the Year
Lake of Menteith Hotel,
The Trossachs
www.lake-hotel.com
Tel: +44 (0)1877 385 258

décor combine with terrific dining
– both informal and fine – to create a truly
special country hotel.

Brasserie of the Year
The Scotsman, Edinburgh
www.northbridgebrasserie.com
Tel: +44 (0)131 556 5565

The airy, atmospheric North Bridge
Brasserie is a gem, led by Food &

www.theparklandshotel.com
Tel: +44 (0)1738 622 451

Hotel of Charm
Culloden House, Inverness
www.cullodenhouse.co.uk
Tel: +44 (0)1463 790 461

Hotel of Beauty
Glenapp Castle, Ayrshire
www.glenappcastle.com
Tel: +44 (0)1465 831 212

As grand castles go, few are as beautiful
as Glenapp. The high setting affords
glorious views. The castle is grand but the
welcome is friendly and genuine. Chef
Adam Stokes’ is a rising star, too.

Hoteliers of the Year
Wendy & Don Matheson,
Boath House
www.boath-house.com
Tel: +44 (0)1667 454 896

This pretty Georgian manor sits in perfect
gardens; while indoors, all is serene and
charming with elegant colours and wellchosen
art. Spa treatments, too. A gem.

Luxury Hotel of the Year
Rocpool Reserve, Inverness
www.rocpool.com
Tel :+44 (0)1463 240 089

Utterly sleek and not a little sexy, this five
star hotel is the city sister of acclaimed
Inverlochy Castle. Outstanding service,
accommodation and style – you may take
these as givens. A new French restaurant
will be the talk of the town.
