The small Alloway cottage where Robert Burns was born has been gifted to the National Trust for Scotland.
The cottage, as well as an irreplaceable collection of artifacts and original manuscripts, and other assets including the iconic Burns monument and gardens, have been generously donated by the Burns Monument Trust.
This milestone enables the conservation charity to begin work to create the new Robert Burns Birthplace Museum which is due for completion in 2010.
The National Trust for Scotland has written to all its members asking for donations to support the ambitious plans to develop the new museum.
In return for a £30 donation, NTS members have been given the opportunity to sign up to a donors scroll which will appear online and at the new museum.
