2005 Hotels of the Year

When you plan your holiday in Scotland – or even a business trip – it’s sometimes a challenge to know which hotel to book. There are several guides, one of which is the leading independent website with which Scotland Magazine has an exclusive partnership – this means we can bring you the best tips, news and advice on where to go for the very best stay.

But now there’s another way to choose: take a look at the winners of this year’s leading Scottish hotel awards.

The second Scottish Hotels of the Year Awards were held in the glamorous surroundings of The Balmoral Hotel in Edinburgh. Scotland Magazin sponsored the Sensationally Scottish Award 2005 as we felt that many of our readers might like to experience an emphatically Scottish hotel.

The winner, The Albannach at Lochinver in the beautiful north-west Highlands, is a haven of Scottish chic, fabulous food while the owners add character and wit.

The Scottish Hotels of the Year Awards are unique in that they invited readers of, Scotland Magazine, and many other media to vote at the awards website, – or via inbedroom cards in hotels.

At the sell-out Awards Night Party, the biggest gathering of Scottish hotels (with more than 100 represented), guest of honour was Orcadian winner of massive television hit show Big Brother, Cameron Stout.

More than 11,500 votes were cast from over 40 countries. Independent scrutineers checked each vote and the 10-strong awards panel of key figures in Scottish tourism then also voted and interpreted the overall result.

Guest presenters made the awards on a fabulous night interspersed with opera from Casta Divas, entertainment from Mischief la Bas, and the event was rounded off by a ceilidh until the early hours.
