Edinburgh Fringe
And you can’t have the Edinburgh International Festival without the Edinburgh Fringe, the largest arts festival in the world.
While the EIF focuses more on opera, ballet and classical music, the Fringe is focused almost exclusively on the performing arts (particularly theatre and comedy). It also hosts the Edinburgh Film Festival, surprisingly the longest running dedicated film festival.
The Edinburgh Fringe was started in 1947, the same year that the Edinburgh Festival was started. A few rogue theatre companies decided to take advantage of the crowds of that had desended on Edinburgh by putting on unofficial performances of their own.
Since then the Fringe has outgrown the Edinburgh International and sells more than a million tickets each year. The Fringe will run from August 7th to the 29th and tickets go on sale from June 10th.
