This historic chair bears an inscription on a silver plate: "From President's Room Culloden House Where Prince Charlie Slept for the Three Nights Previous to The Battle".
'The Battle' is none other than the Battle of Culloden, where the rebellious Jacobites, led by Prince Charles Edward Stuart, were defeated. The Prince slept in Culloden Castle for at least three days before battle, with the wooden commode chair (made of padouk) next to his bed. The commode chair, later upholstered with a needlework seat, eventually entered the possession of Ramsay MacDonald, three-time British Prime Minister.
It was auctioned at Bonhams in Edinburgh on November 22nd 2001, fetching £6,600....
